    Compelled to do the right thing

    We use a model of opinion formation to study the consequences of some mechanisms attempting to enforce the right behaviour in a society. We start from a model where the possible choices are not equivalent (such is the case when the agents decide to comply or not with a law) and where an imitation mechanism allow the agents to change their behaviour based on the influence of a group of partners. In addition, we consider the existence of two social constraints: a) an external authority, called monitor, that imposes the correct behaviour with infinite persuasion and b) an educated group of agents that act upon their fellows but never change their own opinion, i.e., they exhibit infinite adamancy. We determine the minimum number of monitors to induce an effective change in the behaviour of the social group, and the size of the educated group that produces the same effect. Also, we compare the results for the cases of random social interactions and agents placed on a network. We have verified that a small number of monitors are enough to change the behaviour of the society.     Universality Classes of Diagonal Quantum Spin Ladders

    We find the classification of diagonal spin ladders depending on a characteristic integer NpN_p in terms of ferrimagnetic, gapped and critical phases. We use the finite algorithm DMRG, non-linear sigma model and bosonization techniques to prove our results. We find stoichiometric contents in cuprate CuO2CuO_2 planes that allow for the existence of weakly interacting diagonal ladders.Comment: REVTEX4 file, 3 color figures, 1 tabl

    The Berry-Keating Hamiltonian and the Local Riemann Hypothesis

    The local Riemann hypothesis states that the zeros of the Mellin transform of a harmonic-oscillator eigenfunction (on a real or p-adic configuration space) have real part 1/2. For the real case, we show that the imaginary parts of these zeros are the eigenvalues of the Berry-Keating hamiltonian H=(xp+px)/2 projected onto the subspace of oscillator eigenfunctions of lower level. This gives a spectral proof of the local Riemann hypothesis for the reals, in the spirit of the Hilbert-Polya conjecture.     Gravitational recoil from spinning binary black hole mergers

    The inspiral and merger of binary black holes will likely involve black holes with both unequal masses and arbitrary spins. The gravitational radiation emitted by these binaries will carry angular as well as linear momentum. A net flux of emitted linear momentum implies that the black hole produced by the merger will experience a recoil or kick. Previous studies have focused on the recoil velocity from unequal mass, non-spinning binaries. We present results from simulations of equal mass but spinning black hole binaries and show how a significant gravitational recoil can also be obtained in these situations. We consider the case of black holes with opposite spins of magnitude aa aligned/anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum, with aa the dimensionless spin parameters of the individual holes. For the initial setups under consideration, we find a recoil velocity of V = 475 \KMS a. Supermassive black hole mergers producing kicks of this magnitude could result in the ejection from the cores of dwarf galaxies of the final hole produced by the collision.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, replaced with version accepted for publication in Ap
